In the last years, citizens within societies have found new ways of organizing their emotional and familiar relationships. This fact has become a challenge to the law discipline, whose new responsibilities go beyond the determination of the legal rules that must be applied to these new family models. The research questions are why and for what purpose the law is interested in those family models. Th e answers will enable us to fi nd out the most appropriate legal
response. This paper attempts to answer these questions, setting the strategic functions of the family as a framework. Then, it analyzes and assess the efficiency of the existing family models to carry out those functions. Finally, some proposals are presented to revitalize the family law.
