The Spanish Constitution of 1978 has never been a specific object of study in the compulsory levels of the educational system. The governments of different parties have limited themselves to including, through the so-called transversal and integrated approaches, sporadic references to the fundamental norm in the curricula of the pre-university training stages. As a consequence of this educational policy, most of the Spanish citizens are unaware of almost everything about the current constitutional order and this has been demonstrated for years by numerous demographic studies. Starting from these premises, it is necessary to reflect on the convenience of implementing constitutional education as an autonomous subject within the framework of secondary education. And this with the understanding that a subject of this type would play, together with others also aimed at promoting the acquisition of civic competences, an important role in the defense and strengthening of our democratic system.
